It would be just right to say that each one of us absolutely love the experience of watching our old pictures filled with memories. It feels beautiful when we see our self finally scanned from a negative and transformed into a beautiful image. That’s what makes photography such a passion and a keen profession for people. In an age where everyone wants to share their photograph on facebook and with the entire world, wouldn’t it be really nice and easy if you could develop your own photograph at home?

With so many advances that science is making everyday, do you think it would not be possible to get a scanner for your self that can scan photographs?

If you think so, you need to think again. Not only are such digital slide scanners available in market, they are also easy to use and affordable. These digital scanners can scan 35 mm films (both mounted and unmounted slides) and also store your image as digital files on your hard disk. Being the plug and play type, they are easy to install. Also the scanner can be easily connected to the computer through a USB port. This feature of digital slide scanners makes it easier to store images directly into the hard drive.

You can also scan old photographs with the help of digital slide scanners. It just requires the negatives. You also need not worry about dust, scratches on the negatives or any other problem as these digital slide scanners are built up on technology that can omit these issues and get your photographs scanned. The time taken will be a few seconds or minutes. The quality of the picture produced will be as good as that produced by any digital camera. The photo is generally more than 5 mega pixels with 3,600 dpi interpolation. The drag and drop feature of digital slide scanners make them entirely user friendly.

These scanners are produced by many major brands in the market. The tough competitors are Canon, Epson, Nikon and Hewlett Packard. The digital scanners of each brand are different and have unique features. You can choose whichever suits your demands and requirements best. A rough idea has been provided below.

Nikon’s LS 9000 and cool scan film scanners are expensive but they are a great technology. If you want something cheaper, you can go for Nikon’s Cool Scan 200. Remember, Nikon Cool scan 200 is not recommended for desktop publishing.

Epson has V300, V500, V700 and V750 digital slide scanners. The V700 is expensive and is made for the high end consumer market. V750 is for professionals.

Canon’s digital slide scanners come with filmget software which can modify and correct colors, curves, brightness, rotation, histogram, color depth, resolution, media type, cropping, dust removal etc.

Hewlett Packard provides its customers the Photo smart scanner and Photo smart S20. Although, their one major disadvantage is that they support only windows operating system.
